It's been a looooooong time since I've seen this movie and I could be completely off base, but wasn't it sort of implied that most of the passengers on that train were the spirits of dead people?

(Anonymous) 2014-02-28 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking the same thing.

(Anon who recently re-bought the DVD and has been watched it several times since then)

That was my thought as well.

If you enjoy reading people's different interpretations, there's a pretty interesting collection right here: http://nakama-britannica.animeuknews.net/2008/08/11/chihiros-train-journey-in-spirited-away

(Sorry I can't make the link clickable, but that's OpenID for ya.)

I think that's one popular interpretation but it's not confirmed in canon.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-28 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
Not necessarily. A lot of them were just nature spirits of various kinds.

I understand. For me, that movie was very good at getting to me on that deep, emotional instinctive level that isn't even rational. It was like watching pieces of a childhood that wasn't mine but still felt like it could be a memory, you know. I'm not surprised it would speak to you on that level, where it just represents calmness.

(Anonymous) 2014-02-28 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, that's it exactly. My childhood was nothing like that, but it still evoked a lot of those childhood memories/feelings.

Really good way of putting it.

That's...yes. That's it exactly.

Her experiences do not strike me as simple, OP, though I can get why the environment is soothing.

I always liked that train scene too. It's kind of soothing after all the commotion you just went through before in the movie.

I'm with you, OP. That's one of my favorite scenes from any movie.

The music in that scene might be the most soothing music ever written. I really should get the soundtrack just to play that on rough nights.

when I lived in Japan and got really really stressed I would do just that: get on a train and ride it through the mountains, alongside the ocean, just staring out the window. It was so peaceful. I always felt better afterward. I wish there was some sort of train system I could ride where I am now.

You and me, OP. You and me. It's the most gloriously peaceful and dreamlike piece of cinema I've ever seen. I love the whole movie, but this ... this is good for the soul. And especially if all those shadows are shades finding their way in the afterlife. What a beautiful late afternoon afterlife it is, eh?

Spirited Away might have some of the most peaceful scenes I've ever seen in a movie (or in a media production, period).

I mean, the story got pretty hectic at times, but those tranquil scenes were almost overpowering.

I'd love to visit a place like that, some day, and just sit for hours next to a watery train track, or what have you.
