Wow, I can't even imagine that!

TBH, it seems to me that Hutch would be the kind of character actors would be more excited to play -- he's very messed-up and complicated in a lot of ways, whereas Starsky is a very straightforward and well-adjusted guy. (Well, he was, at least. Before all the murdered girlfriends and murdered friends and obsessive arch-enemies.)

Well, IMO David Soul had enough things messed up in his real life. I think he just wanted to play an enjoyable role. I don't think he was a big "actor's actor." Not that he didn't care about his craft, just that he liked working, and he liked having roles that he could enjoy playing, when it was possible.

The show took a toll on both men, but they became best friends and helped each other through some tough times. I don't think David would have made it without Paul believing in him & accepting him unconditionally, to be honest.

In one of the magazine articles of the time, they are described as literally hugging each other for long minutes when they first met on set for filming. You know, full-bodied, I-need-this-moment-to-survive hugging. They really cared/care about each other.

Anyway I'm glad we got a glimpse of that friendship on screen. I think a lot of it was honest feelings coming through (not to say they aren't skilled, careful actors, but just that they put real feelings into their roles, too).

No disrespect meant to them of course, and I could be wrong bout some things. :)

Huh, I didn't know about any of this. Pretty much the only thing I know about the actors was that they were friends IRL and Glaser allegedly liked to dent up the Torino on purpose.

I don't want to sound like a dick and ask what kind of messed up things, but...now I'm curious?

Eh, I find myself strangely reluctant to get into it. :( I don't want to spread any more gossip or drag his personal problems into it. Life just relly hadn't been easy for either of them.

On the bright side, I've heard they're both doing pretty well lately.

DA Well I don't know whether this qualifies as messed up, but Paul Michael Glaser's wife Elizabeth died of AIDS, so he had that to contend with, clearly quite a while after the series ended.

David Soul struggled a lot with alcohol. He moved to London a long time ago and has been living in North London for many years, in a pretty small flat, he does work in theatre and film in Britain sometimes.
