Severe Chan (like 12-14) always squicked me even when I was around that age. I could read porny fics for 15-17. Now I don't even care to read fics where HP and gang are in school. I like reading post-Hogwarts fic so much more.

Some of those old school fics really show their age, and If You Are Prepared is one of them.

for a second I thought Severe Chan was a name while glancing through. just saying.

I started working on a story when I was 14 that had a character who started a sexual relationship at 15. Now I have plans to actually write out that backstory and I'm bumping her up to 16 for ease of mind. It makes me sad though, because I liked her story as it was.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
There is no valid story point to doing that, jsyk. People DO start sexual relationships at 15, and earlier. How you write it and if the partner is a peer - much more important than a number.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I can't read the series again, because it's 1st person Snape pov. I find that those type of fic don't stand the test of time.

What's the youngest you will write?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
What's the lowest age you would be comfortable writing/reading about in a shipping context? Mine would be 16, though I've read 15 and aged them up a year in my head.

For kissing and blushing, 14/15; for anything more, 16.

If it is with each other, 16/17, although I don't do it often. If it is with someone older, the younger one has to be at least 18, preferably 21.

Does it count if they're like 13 in canon but you age them up to 18?

Re: What's the youngest you will write?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
15, and that's only if both teenagers are the same age as each other.

Besides kids holding hands, 16 or17.

Depends on the level of shipping. For first kisses/blushing/hand-holding, I'm totally cool with writing kids of any age. For sexual stuff, I avoid writing kids under 17. (I know I was thinking about sex much younger, and masturbating, but I feel like 17 is a non-squicky age for me to write about.)

What originally got Something Awful calling me a sick freak was that I wrote sexual activity (not penetrative sex, just experimentation) between 13-year-olds. The characters met around age 6, and the story followed them through adulthood--13 seemed like the age when these particular characters would begin to experiment, given their behaviors and tendencies.

My "creepy" rule isn't based on how young the characters are, but how wide the gap in age is. I'd be willing to portray two 6-year-olds playing doctor, but not a 14-year-old kissing an 18-year-old. (I don't figure in the age gap between the characters and the reader, because I think if I write it well, it should make readers remember what it was like to be that age.)

Yeah, I've no problem with stuff like that. Like when it's a realistic look at life at that age and has to do with plot and character development, not a PWP kind of thing. It's not meant to be smutty.

I think with stuff like that, people are more afraid of their own age than the characters' ages. I know I am. I wouldn't be able to read what you write because though I played doctor and such when I was young, it just feels inappropriate to get a glimpse of that in the young characters I see.

I'm definitely with you on the age gap being more of a problem with me. I feel like there's a power imbalance there that's super skeevy to me. If there's an age difference, I prefer a couple of years at most under 18. After 18, all's good.

Depends on the context of the canon. In something like Naruto, where it's commonplace for kids to pay rent, live alone, and kill people for a living, I'm okay with fourteen years old and up. In a more modern-day setting, anything under sixteen is likely to weird me out.

Handholding/hugging/kisses on the cheek/blushing? Toddlers, if they're the same age. (Seen it IRL, think it's adorable, could easily ship characters from babyhood)

Mouth to mouth kissing and racier? Early teens, even if the other partner is older. Power imbalances are one of my deep, dark kinks (but only in fiction!).

To me, it depends a heck of a lot more on how they're written than the number. If it's obvious how ~young~ and ~innocent~ and ~childlike~ they are, I don't care if the author says they're 300.

Or, I think stuff like in earlier fandom days, Gundam Wing and Sailor Moon in the shows they're supposed to be 12-14? Yeah, the majority of the fic treated them more like they were supposed to be late teens/early 20s.

And as for the first, it really sucks because I absolutely love first time fic where they have no idea what sex even is and it's new-awesome-scary, but it almost always paired with underage fetish stuff and nope.

I mostly read post-Hogwarts stuff, but I've read some fics where they're still in school and enjoyed them. I don't like most student/teacher stuff while the characters are still students. the most interesting part of HP fanfic is dealing with the ramifications of everything that happened which is probably why I prefer post-Hogwarts.

There was a time that I was fine with - as Fingalsanteater puts it - severe chan. I got over it. But even now I don't mind stuff that is between teenagers in to 14-15-16 range, because I view that as being an age range where kids are starting to do that sort of thing.

My big problem with old fics is that HP canon made me dislike characters I was willing to give a pass back when I was first in the fandom. My first ship was Harry/Draco but I can't stnd it these days because books 5-6-7 made me dislike Draco too much. The same things applies to Snape - further canon made me hate him.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Are you me? Ages 13-16 I was a HUGE Snarry shipper and I actually preferred stories where Harry was younger... My brain apparently didn't see anything wrong with a man in his 30s starting a relationship with what I'd now call a child if it was 'true love' and they were soul-mates or whatever. At 24 though, underage fic/art is one of my biggest squicks. Which is a normal thing, I know, but I do miss enjoying the ship sometimes too; the fics I've tried to reread have never as good as I remembered, both in terms of writing quality and emotional impact.
