No, it's that he looked visibly dirty before he got a late manga makeover. He didn't have a beard before. He had stray hairs on his face. I don't give a shit about whether a character has a beard or not.

Sorry, OP, I think this art is kind of ugly. The only way this guy would be attractive would be if he were dressed in a full-body apple pie costume. And it is not because a real person that looks like this would be unattractive, it's because he's badly drawn.

The nose disturbs me. I think he could cut apples with that nose.

The huuuge chin... thing that makes him look like he's got two mouths. That's not how chins work.

There are some other minor things, but that's it, mostly.

I like Minekura, but I've always found her character designs somewhat off-putting too. For me I think it's the dead-fish eyes and the thinness of her characters. (Not that I think thinness is off-putting, but just the way she draws it almost fetishistic-ally)

Different strokes, different folks. I think Kazuya Minekura's style is interesting and pretty. I don't like the common goggle eyed character style so I like that her characters look like adults.

I found him more attractive as Ukoku Sanzo than as Ni Jianyi too, but that was less because of his appearance and more because of his personality. As Ukoku, while he was still sociopathic and extremely creepy, he didn't have the 'sleazy creeper' vibe he does as Ni Jianyi. Hanging around with Gyokumen Koushou instead of Koumyou Sanzo has done nothing for his personality.

Mind you, I might also have found him more palatable in the presence of Koumyou on the grounds that I ship them like FedEx. Night/Moon OTP over here. I probably can't discount that as a factor in my reasoning.
