Weird worries about Rivers of London
I. Since (according to Aaronovitch) the series was initially supposed to be a TV show love child of DW and a police procedural, I'm afraid that it's going to go on indefinitely, have its plot be fucked and fuck itself up, and end up in a "to be continued" with no actual continuation. I hate having my favourite book series ending up unfinished (unless they consist of stand-alones).
II. The TV series that's going to be made. DUDE, am I apprehensive about this. I want to cringe into a black hole when I think of all the social justice issues that can be brought up, all the hate rabid fans will send to Aaronovitch, all the stupidity and insanity the actors will go through. I'm afraid that Aaronovitch will have Arthur Conan Doyle'd after that.
And then again, I hate it when TV shows are made based on the book series that are currently being written. I just know it's going to mess everything up.
Re: Weird worries about Rivers of London
(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)I think I'd be as afraid that they're going to do a Dresden Files on it and produce something that's essentially a completely different story with some characters who happen to have the same names (not that TV!Dresden was bad, mind, just that it bore only passing resemblance to Book!Dresden). The race and gender issues probably add an extra edge to that, though, yes.
I'm not so worried about the Bookverse in light of the DW connection, though. Mostly because the episodes of DW he wrote include Battlefield, one of my all time favourite serials, and one that showed a lot of respect for and continuity with previous eras of Who (Third Doctor era in particular), as well as introducing one of my favourite once-off characters in the Whoverse with Brigadier Bambera. That doesn't guarantee anything for Rivers, of course, but the DW connection on its own wouldn't be enough to make me worry, given which parts of DW he's been involved with.
Re: Weird worries about Rivers of London
You reassured me a little, thank you. I do find it likely that Aaronovitch will be able to keep the plot integral, because so far it's been excellently crafted, but it's nice to have some additional proof of his ability.
Yes, I'm afraid of the Dresden Files scenario, too. And then there will be a ton of TV-only fans who will overrun my
lawnsmall nice fandom and turn the characters into a mess.
