I couldn't be less of a Hiddleston fan, but I do think his lacklustre Henry V was very much his director's fault. It was the first of the plays that was filmed - and his first speech was 'Once more unto the breach' which is pretty much the deepest of deep ends. Moreover she continued to make odd choices throughout the play. I actually felt sorry for the guy and felt he had a much better chance as Hal.

Jeremy Irons was brilliant - again, the director made an odd decision or two - and the scenery was good; and so was Ben Wishaw. But 'Hollow Crown' is a variety of parsnip (gardening anon) and I think this sums the whole production up very well.

I find filmed for TV plays strange at the best of times and IMO that production did seem to suffer a little from being caught between the two. I don't mind it but I agree with you there's a few issues.

I also believe Hiddleston was hampered by some of the decisions made by the director but as someone who does identify as a fan I'm wary of saying that in case people think I'm just defending one of my faves. So it's actually quite nice to see someone who isn't a fan say that. That's not to say there aren't issues with his interpretation but it can't help if you're given something to work with that doesn't work.

And it's funny you mention Henry V being the first filmed because even before I knew that, I got that impression. The Hollow Crown is so weird for me in that it seems to get progressively worse in terms of overall quality. And that's not me saying the later parts are terrible, it's just I didn't feel Henry IV Part II and Henry V as much as the other two plays.
