Anna and Elsa sound sort of similar. I can see how one could get confused, especially if they hadn't seen the movie. If Disney had kept Anna's name as Gerda like in the original fairytale it might've been easier but I guess they thought Gerda didn't sound royal enough. After all, they gave her an upgrade from village girl to princess.

It's okay, they also changed everything else about the story. </bitter>

Haha, this is true. As much as I liked Frozen, I'm still wishing for a more faithful animated adaptation of the story. I've watched the 1957 Russian version which is gorgeous, but I'd still love to see a new one. Mainly because I loved the original designs for the snow queen that Disney had in 2003 when they were still making it closer to the original.

Also because the original involves a long, arduous journey and I'm a sucker for those types of stories.

I wonder if this is some kind of pronunciation thing, because Anna and Elsa don't really sound much alike to me. I can see getting confused between which name goes with which face, but the names themselves shouldn't be too difficult to mix up.

Actually, they could have used scandinavian names that aren't also common to half of Europe. Like Tomine, or Hedda, Birgit, whatever. I'm sure there's no shortage of original names.
They probably didn't want to go all the way with mythological names, but still.

Actually, I recently found out an interesting tidbit that, to me, makes the names kind of AWESOME.

Hans Christian Anderson is the writer of (the most famous version of?) The Snow Queen.

The characters are:

Hans Kristoff Anna Sven

The names are a direct tribute to him. :D Elsa isn't included, but I kind of like her name. As far as I know, it's not a common Western name, right? It still sounds "normal" but is pretty, too.

Eh, the story is barely even related to the Snow Queen, so idk what the point of that is (same with those two servants named Gerda and Kai).

There were minor characters named Gerda and Kai? Oh come on. =_=

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It was still "inspired by". They were probably planning a more direct adaption and it develop into the current version. This is still a tribute to the original inspiration.

I seriously don't understand why it annoys people so much.

I think a lot of us liked the original story and got all excited about seeing a Disney adaptation of it, only to realize that it wasn't really an adaptation of the same story at all. :(

mte.

Yeah, it was changed, for better or worse. But at least they aren't pretending it's an original idea? I think the name tribute is cute. And even if the story was changed, it is still a great story and has a lot of great themes.

Because people love the original fairy tale and want to see that on the big screen. Of course they're going to be disappointed when the end product has barely any similarity to the story they love.

I have no beef with Frozen, but that's why I don't like Cinderella.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-03 05:08 am (UTC)(link)
...but Disney's Cinderella is very close to the specific Cinderella story it's based on (which is Perrault's, NOT Grimm's)...what am I missing?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-03 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Elsa is a pretty common Western name.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-03 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
..I'm Western and I have never once heard the name Elsa. It can't be that common.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? My cat's name is Elsa. (Admittedly, after the lion in Born Free, but I've heard it elsewhere).

And now for something completely different

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-03-03 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've only just realized that Elsa reminds me of Natalie Dormer. I don't know why. Maybe it's the little smirk at the end of "Let It Go?"

Now that you point it out... strangely it's only confident, sassy Elsa though. I can't see Dormer in the rest of the scenes where Elsa's sad or scared.

What's wrong with the names "Anna" and "Elsa"?

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-03-03 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Nothing, I just confuse them.

This was more mentioned as an, "Oh, that's kind of cute" name thing, but it could be used to remember which is which! Elsa has an S in it, which makes it sound more like 'ice'. Elsa -> Isa -> ice.
