So many things, but I'm not sure if it's that they're not common knowledge or I'm just surrounded by the wrong people...

I get this a lot too. Being fair, it's probably a symptom of the fact that there are a LOT more books I've read than there are people I have conversations with -_-;

It tends to make me bad at jokes, too. There was one, my Dad came back from the pub and relayed a joke about a drunk guy who was warned away from hitting on two ladies because they were lesbians, and ignored it to schmooze up to them and ask "So, when did you two arrive from Lesbania, then?"

And all I could think of was "Why Lesbania and not Lesbos?" Since, you know, actual island and supposed origin of the usage of 'lesbian' meaning homosexual, because Sappho of Lesbos?

The only response I got was "Why do you know that? Seriously. Who knows that?"

I genuinely have no idea which bits of information people around me will have heard of most of the time.
