Re: Things you thought were common knowledge, but aren't?

I keep being surprised over and over by how little people know about firearms and how they function. I swear I once saw a fic where BBC John Watson was playing Russian Roulette with that gun he brought back from the army... the one that's a semiautomatic...

criiinge. Was it at least an otherwise badly written fic?

Well, I could see how knowing about firearms could be an important and useful knowledge, but I wouldn't count it as common knowledge, especially if you live on a place/country where they are not of common use/are banned.

I, for one, would like to learn more about them, but since only the police and the military are allowed to use them in my country, I wouldn't even know where I could start to learn more.

A friend of mine wrote a decent mini-primer on handguns for fic writers: http://liviapenn.dreamwidth.org/503406.html

In the comments there, someone linked to this, which is slightly more thorough: http://chn-breathmint.livejournal.com/482045.html

Hope that's helpful!

While the primers are good, some of the comments are bullshit, so readers be warned.

I'm a pinner nerd and I've never struggled to pull a slide back in my entire life. I don't know if she's just doing it wrong, or on the verge of death, but it's really not difficult at all, even for - gasp - a woman. Seriously. Small children load, cock, and fire these weapons by accident all the time. If your grip strength is comparable to a three year old you can pull this off. Scully would absolutely have been able to use the firearm she had in the show with no problems unless she was an invalid; also, the poster appears not to know that organizations like the FBI assign firearms to agents. You don't bring your own like a packed lunch.

Also... "clip". For real.

That was my thinking. Considering guns are more or less banned in Britian, perhaps it was a Brit writing that above story perhaps having very very limited knowledge about how guns actually work.

Of course guns are very much legal in the US and there's so much gun fail in US written fic as well. :-/

Don't even get me started at how I cringe at the fics that insist on having Jack Harkness stick a loaded gun up his ass.

That could be a case of "nobody except the police and people in shooting clubs actually owns a gun in my country". Still doesn't excuse the lack of research, but still...

I was about to say that it's excusable not to know about guns if you're not allowed to own them in your country but then I read your whole comment and.... oh.
