Jelly/Jello is not vegetarian.

Unless it's a brand made from agar-agar (a seaweed) or kosher jello. Neither are common, but both things exist. Agar-agar based gelatins are more common in Asia.

Uncommon and f*cking expensive where I live.

AFAIK kosher gelatin is not necessarily vegan either. This is one thing the UK does get right, they mark the gelatin(e) source (beef, pork, fish) on almost everything.

Some people think vegetarians eat seafood. I don't know why. I once had someone offer me shrimp because she thought I was vegetarian. I mean, I think there are some people who consider themselves vegetarian who will still eat fish and I have a vegan friend who once told me she doesn't really have a problem with eating fish (although she doesn't), but I would never assume someone who called themselves a vegetarian would eat anything that required the death of any animal without checking first.

I agree completely. And I'm a vegetarian who eats (occasionally) seafood (technically a pescatarian (sp?), I know.) But there just are so many people who call themselves vegetarian but still eat fish, or even occasionally all white meat. It's often easier to call yourself vegetarian than explain exactly what animals/foods you eat and don't.

That being said, if someone says vegetarian? Make no assumptions. I'd much prefer someone even asking if I'm okay with eggs and cheese, than assuming I eat fish, or chicken.

That's because we have a large population of Muslims, Hindus and Jews, so that sort of thing is important for them to know.

Heck, my GP has a sign up in reception listing what ingredients are in the flu vaccine, due to it having pork gelatine in.
