Okay, i only know Tony Stark via the movies - IM and Avengers - how is he a jackass? Is he terribly jack-assy in the comics? I just don't get it.

Well he's not a jackass per se (that was a poor choice of words), but he's really snarky and abrasive, too much so sometimes imo.

Hrmmmmm.
I guess the comics make it more obvious? I find him just fine in the movies. I mean - he says something Steve doesn't get. He doesn't make fun of him, he explains. 'Is Pilates your thing?' (confused look) 'It's like calisthenics.'

I mean - sure, he's making a snarky comment, but he's not being *mean*, and he makes sure Steve gets it. I dunno.

It took me all three movies to really like Tony. I think he's totally douchebaggy in the movies. I like him retroactively now, but on watching that first movie, I was all, "Ewwwwwwwwwwww. Assy McAssyFace." Iron Man 2 I felt better about, and Iron Man 3 I adored. And I loved The Avengers.

That's so weird. I didn't see anything in IM1 that made me think he was an ass. He wasn't mean to Pepper, or Rhodey (snarky, but not mean)....i dunno. He was nice to the soldiers driving him.

I guess snark doesn't bother me.

YYMV with any character, but for me, I really got the sense from his behavior that he didn't care about anyone but himself, that he was emotionally manipulative, and that he was a self-destructive person who left others to pick up the pieces of his mistakes.

I grew to like him over the course of all the films because I think he changed. maybe it's just that the characteristics I didn't see initially became more foregrounded.
