Re: Stuff you used to love but now can't stand?

It's wildly popular because it is dumb. If it actually required some knowledge of the areas of expertise of the characters, or what the lives of academics are actually like to understand the jokes, it would have a fraction of the audience it does. "Lowest common denominator" is why shit like BBT, American Idol, and the Kardashians are so tremendously popular. It's why even someone intelligent shows shovel in sex and violence for a broader appeal.

I think my problem is I can understand liking dumb things and watching something that helps you turn your brain off, but for me more often then not if there is not something good about a series it's more likely to piss me off then to help me relax.

This goes double and triple for things that are offensive and not at all funny, like Two and a Half Men. Maybe I can see it entertaining some men, but to the level that show got ratings? ... Well it makes me just feel like I don't understand people.

I also don't understand how people don't get tired of it either way, I've never watched a reality show season after season because it all starts blending together the more you watch it. I eventually quit reality tv all together and I felt better for it.
