They probably didn't know/recall the known details of Hitler's death. It's fairly glossed over in a lot of history courses not dedicated to the specific study of that time period. Or, if they were younger especially, they were taught by one of the many, many conspiracy theorists who are incapable of shutting up about the subject.

A lot of people don't research things they've learned in school to see if they were given a full view of the topic, or just an abridged, erroneous, or politicized fragment.
