Look up Joss Whedon's reputation for dealing with pregnant actresses. It's not pretty.

I'm getting the sense that you have ~feelings about Joss Whedon. am I wrong or..

Just pointing out that Joss does not have the best track record when it comes to pregnant actresses, and sometimes that translates to his taking that out on the female character she plays onscreen.

Look up what happened to Charisma Carpenter when she got pregnant on Angel if you don't believe me.

Charisma Carpenter lied about being pregnant until the situation forced a huge rewrite in the middle of the season. Which was, of course, terribly executed b/c the writers had to pull it out of thin air. If someone's dishonestly damaged one of my projects that way, I'd be pissed off and want to fire them too.

Maybe she had a legit reason given how things turned out for her character to want to hide her pregnancy from Joss as long as possible?

DA Maybe she did but from what I've read, this was not the only issue with Charisma, she had a tendency to do things that broke from her contract and made things difficult for the writers. Television and movies have strict contracts about these things because just one actor or actress not obeying their contract can mean shutting down production for a whole group of people (people who are not getting paid as well as actors and actresses either.)

All we really know about what happened is a few rumors and what Charisma has said, no one else really commented about it, it was years ago, none of knows the complete story and I wish people would stop pretending like they did.

As a comics fan from way back, seeing the Black Widow referred to as "a Joss character" makes a little part of my soul just shrivel up and die.

I thought that too. And Scarlett didn't even make her first appearance as Black Widow in a Joss-scripted picture. Joss did not cast her and Joss is not the be-all-end-all for the MCU! :\

Is Cordelia the only character that got axed that way? I'm trying to think of other pregnant actors he's worked with and can't.

First, Black Widow is not a Joss character.

Second, filming starts in April - SJ will be 6 months pregnant then. First 3-4 months could be shots involving her stunt double, or scenes that don't involve her. If she has an easy birth she can be filming by mid July / early August. If she needs to take it easy, SHE HAS A STUNT DOUBLE. This is not an insurmountable problem.

I don't think he'd be allowed to treat the character like that.

This is a huge franchise. So much money depends on getting it right, especially after the success of the first film.

If you think that the studio and everyone behind financing and producing this thing haven't got their asses covered and contingency plans in place for pregnant actresses, you're kidding yourself.

For one thing, Marvel has the last word about who dies and who doesn't and Joss has to get permission to kill off any characters, so if Black Widow dies then you can blame Marvel, not Joss.

And as far as "Joss and pregnant actresses" goes, the incident with Charisma happened years back and was due to her keeping it a secret and changing production plans completely. That hurt not only Joss, but an entire crew, this was not some petty fight between the two of them since both of their actions effected everyone who worked on Angel.

It was one unfortunate incident, not a pattern. Joss works with a lot of women, including ones who have been pregnant and have children. The thing with Charisma was horrible but I'm not going to condemn him when I don't even know the whole story.
