Somewhere between three and five seasons. Depending on the series of course; some shows can get away with five+ seasons without failing in quality, but most don't get that lucky.

Just out of curiosity, what would you give as an example of a show that went 5+ seasons without falling into the shitter?

I should've checked the shows I had in mind before leaving the comment because I was thinking of Justified and Archer and both are actually in their 5th seasons. Still, both are still fantastic as always and with Archer, I think the show could easily go on for a couple more seasons and still be funny as ever. Justified is ending after one more season and while I'm okay with that (...I guess, blah), I'm in no hurry to see it go either; they've done a good job of keeping things interesting.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how they wrap up Justified. Holding out hope for Raylan and Boyd to ride off into the sunset (not necessarily in a romantic fashion).

I want that as well! The only real complaint I have with Justified is those two don't get enough screentime together. (I get why... It's just disappointing.)

I could watch the Raylan and Boyd show all day long. But then, I love all the other characters too, and wish they all had more screen time. I just love the show in general.

Ooo, yes. That would be the best show ever. Their relationship is so deliciously fucked up (and often, oddly heartwarming), I love it.

Yea, Justified is one of the few tv shows I've watched where the entire cast is wonderful. Lots of talented people, lots of intriguing, well written characters. Everyone is awesome, but I can never have enough Rachel or Tim, and I have massive amounts of love for Loretta and Art too. And Boyd...Boyd could have his own show, he's so good; TPTB lucked out when they got Walton Goggins.

Pardon me for barging in uninvited, but I would suggest Burn Notice as a show that went for more than 5 seasons without turning into a steaming pile.

Eh, my enjoyment of Burn Notice went down during season three and I stopped watching during season four.

Fair enough.

Procedurals without a lot of focus on the characters' lives outside of work usually can field at least 7 seasons before declining. They're less common on tv these days but because they are also more likely to change up their main cast, it keeps things fresh. Hell, can you imagine if Law & Order had ended at season 5, Sam Waterston's first year on the show?

On the more recent side, The Closer stayed pretty evenly good for 7 seasons. After season 4 I think the writers realized that they were starting to get a little more routine and started some strong new plotlines about police bureaucracy in 5-6 (the various characters vying for Chief; introducing Captain Raydor and the Internal Affairs stuff as a foil to Brenda but making her not a one-dimensional antagonist) and in 6-7, having Brenda suffer some serious consequences for her more unsavory actions. As well she should.
