City, small town, country? Where do you live?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
The gangs thread got me curious about the breakdown here. Do you live in a bit city? Small town? In the middle of nowhere? On a secret island?

I suppose mine would be considered a small town - population of about 4000.

I would have said "out in the country" or "in the middle of nowhere" but then I took a roadtrip across the US and found out what that really means.

Hi spreadsheet!

And it's a decent-sized town.

I thought spreadsheet was a he, but I'm pretty sure they never specified. Although, someone posted as spreadsheet in the height and weight thread and mentioned being especially small (like double digit weight and below average height), which makes me inclined to see spreadsheet as a she.

But alas, that could have been another anon joking.

A small city at the moment, for college, but I still consider home to be a quiet village several miles away from the closest town.

I'll go with a large town, I live in the suburbs of a city but not directly in the center of it so large town is probably more accurate.

Big city! And I love it.

A big city with a population of over 8 millions and too much chaos.

I live in a capital city that gets passed up for the washed out major cities in the state on weather maps.

Small town, less than 4000 people. But we're right outside of a military base that trains upwards of 80,000 people a year. It's very 'small town' around here, and you have to drive at least two hours in any direction to find more than a horrible w-m or Kroger.

If it's not too personal a question - what do you do for a living? This is kind of what I always wonder about small towns, being from a big city myself...

Around here, not much if you don't have a trade. There's the usual retail, fast food, stuff like that, but most of the people here are connected with the Fort and do some kind of civilian contract thing with them.

But plumbers, electricians, welders and etc. always have a job. Construction usually, too, but not so much lately. We've got a couple of clinics/health centers, smattering of beauty shops, tattoo shops, car repair, stuff like that. It's a little different being outside a major military post - a lot of people in really small towns commute to nearby bigger 'cities' (10,000 people or so) for their jobs.

I'm from a town similar in size and from the sound of it, location. And for here - you commute. It's really not odd for someone to commute over an hour to work, sometimes 2. There are also the local jobs - working at the schools, town office, for the town, etc. Or there are farms too, but mostly people commute to work around here.

Los Angeles. Whether that's a city or just an endless semi-urban sprawl (apparently a serious debate among some city planners) is up to you. :P

My home city is Indianapolis - city, definitely, but small for a city. I don't live there most of the time, though, and my actual home is in the 'burbs - our city limits are weird enough that it's still part of the city in every legal sense, but it's not downtown. I would like to live downtown in a city sometime. And I really love Indianapolis <3

Biggish city, around 4.6 million. (Actually, it's in my profile, so no point not saying what it is - Sydney, Australia.) Admittedly, I live in the suburbs, about a 20-minute drive from the city centre, so it's not like... inner-city CBD constant hustle and bustle, it's reasonably quiet aside from a main road not far away.

A pretty average sized town*, if you consider it in Norwegian terms, but then again there are more people living in London than in all of Norway... I used to live in the third largest town in Norway a couple of years ago, random fact: We don't have a distinction between Town and City in Norwegian as we don't need it. We call everything a Town or just a place if there are basically no one living there.

*About 25.000 people I think, but that is counting everyone living in the Municipality is what Wiki tells me is the term for it? Everything in the city and around it that is under the same name...
