Not sure if this is apropos of what you're saying, but I also dislike the fact that with female characters, the definition of "strong" often seems to be "violent and aggressive."

A female character does not need to be literally kicking ass in order to be strong, and assertive is not the same thing as aggressive. People who make a big show of being tough often aren't, they're bluffing and blustering to cover up their insecurities and self-doubts.

It's not admirable or acceptable for a female character to treat other people poorly, any more than it's admirable or acceptable for a male character to treat other people poorly. A character who makes a big show of being loud and aggressive and picking fights and bossing other people around, and being overtly hostile, isn't "strong", she's just reckless and a bully.

Writers/creators don't know how to portray a female character as "strong" without having her be physically violent, overbearing, and combative in a really crude, obvious, oversimplified way, like a big flashing sign that says "Look how tough I am!"
