Right here in this community. I really want to get into cosplay but have been told here that since I am not a "normal" sized person (I wear an US14-16) I should only cosplay fat characters.

I am really tired of people who think it's OK to treat other people like crap because they are overweight and use the excuse that it's for your own good for health reasons.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Because we all know shaming someone helps them develop the self-discipline and confidence to improve their quality of life. -_-

14-16 is fucking skinny imo. Sorry for the swear. :(

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
14-16 is not skinny. Quit deluding yourself. I'm a size 16 and I know that I am overweight. There's no way I'd ever call myself skinny.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

you poor nonce

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 08:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for goodness' sake. US size 14-16 is BIG.

Maybe anon had misread and thought UK or Aus 14-16?
That still wouldn't be considered as skinny where I live, but it's not big either.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
But you know what's funny? At size 14-16 I am healthier then I have ever been and have a way higher quality of life from when I was struggling to be smaller. I was constantly hungry and feeling like crap physically and emotionally because I wasn't eating enough but still couldn't lose enough to be 'normal'.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
14-16 is not an abnormal size! I am 14-16, and if anyone called me fat I would laugh my fucking ass off.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
You may not be fat, but you're definitely overweight.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
DA--Depends on how tall and/or muscular they are. Also, it's their body, random anons' opinions count for jack-all.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 08:47 am (UTC)(link)
You're a dick.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 05:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Over what weight?

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-03-05 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man fuck that. Some of the best cosplay I have ever seen has been on bigger people. Fuck the haters, cosplay who you want to cosplay.

It's the costume that counts, and I'm personally sick of people who think the fact that they're conventionally attractive will override the fact that they have the worst piece of shit costume on the planet.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Size 14 is exactly average. People are dicks.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
Then the average person is overweight. And if we are talking about the US, then, well, yes.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-06 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
You're either a troll or a person with some seriously screwed up ideas about the human body. Odds are both.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
The primary category by which I judge [by which I mean in the neutral sense of "form an opinion on"] cosplay on is how well it is constructed and presented. A well-made, well-fitting costume with accurate or creative accessories and styling (wig/hairdo, makeup, etc) is almost certainly going to look better than a something pulled together from cheap fabric remnants and thrift store pieces. Good costumes are good costumes, regardless of the build of the fan wearing them.

Exactly.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
So you just want a character that is like you in both looks and personality?

Hey anon!

"glorify obesity" and "fat pig bitch" are great phrases that help you tell when someone is an asshole!

Personally I feel like there are some characters that I couldn't cosplay because I don't think it would like right with my body (Marceline from Adventure Time for example, both Korra and Asami--for the record I am not saying that other people shouldn't cosplay them, this is just how I feel personally about myself).

But then there are others that are really neutral. They look good on a variety of body types! Roxy from Homestuck. Lumpy Space Princess. Flame Princess. Ms Paint. Probably a lot more that I can't remember offhand.

The trick is knowing what looks flattering on you, and finding characters that wear outfits like that. You can modify it too. I have seen a great plus size Queen Serenity from Sailor Moon.

It's TOTALLY WEIRD but I've never gotten hateful comments in real life!

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
does anyone else find it funny that this secret got shoved into the fail pile for being too big?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
People in fandom have the tendency to lash out at other people sometimes because of their own insecurities. It's not "glorifying obesity" to just want it acknowledged that fat people exist and have varied personalities.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to see a character more like you OP.

This is the big reason I've never done cosplay. I was primed to think this way growing up (bullies), and then getting more into fandom and finding it's a magnification of media standards of "attractive" persons, and therefore not a space where everyone who loves the material can enjoy it the same way, was discouraging. Anyway, I empathize completely.

I totally agree with those who have said the execution of the costume is what makes or breaks it, but when it feels like most of the comments/looks you get are the gross, negative ones, it's not the easiest day to get through.
