What Time of Day Does the Mail Arrive?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I ask because recently we've been having our mail delivered really late in the afternoon -- into the evening, and last night not at all. I had two packages on the way whose tracking numbers said they were "failed to deliver" at 9:17 PM. Even if the mail truck actually did stop by, which I suspect it did not (the lady on the usps hotline told me that when tracking numbers say it was that late, it usually means the postal carrier didn't even bother coming around), it's unreasonable to expect access to a private home that late at night. (Our mailbox is inside our gate which is unlocked during the day.)

Anyhoo I filed a complaint and found out that in the US, the latest you should expect your mail is actually 5:00PM! I'm hoping the complaint will do something. I want my manga!

This has actually been only going on for about a month; before that the mail always came right around noon. And now I'm curious: what time does the snail-mail usually come? (You don't have to say where you are.)

Usually around the 11 - 12 o'clock hour. Fedex comes around that time too, UPS sometime in the afternoon. Actually, the only time I get packages at night are if I'm ordering from Chegg or the Disney Store.

You just made me realize that I honestly have no idea. I work 9-5 and just get my mail when I get home from work.

...And now I'm burning with curiosity.

I'm in the UK and it really varies. We tend to get ours in my area anywhere between 11:30am and 1:30pm. I did once get our post at 4:30pm from a postie who looked suspiciously like Barney Rubble (but it WAS just before Christmas, so no wonder it was late!)

OP

Speak of the devil! The truck just showed with four packages and an extra man helping out our regular carrier!

The US Postal Service is operating on extreme debt and can't do anything about it except fire more employees and close more offices. They can deliver mail anytime between 7am and 10pm. The standard is 5pm but they have permission in about a quarter of the country to deliver after 5pm and as late as 10pm.

We usually get our mail between 6pm and 9pm for the last three months because the three closest post offices were closed in December.

If it's there before 1pm I'm shocked.

I work from home so I actually know- between 11:30 and 1:00. Packages being delivered by a carrier service other than the USPS (FedEx, UPS) tend to show up between 11 and 4, with the occasional late outlier.

Changes depending on the time of year, I think both because the snow/ice will slow the mail down and also because they change the route during different seasons. Right now it's a wide window of anywhere between 11am - 4pm. In the summertime it's a little more regular.

Ours seems to come at a different time every day. Always afternoon-evening, but a couple times it's been almost dark, and that never happened when I was a kid.

Around 3 pm on weekdays, 10 am on Saturdays. It's not regular enough to set your watch to, but it's fairly consistent.

I live in a city and not more than 6 miles from the main post office, so once the mail makes it there, it doesn't have that far to go to get to me.

It depends. Where I live we get our mail generally late afternoon. On Mondays (because there is more mail to sort) we often don't get until after 6:00pm. However one of the reasons we are so late is that we are the very edge of our postal area so we are usually among the last to get our mail.

That said, one of our local TV stations was talking about this recently and there were people not getting their mail until 8 or 9 at night.

As been said one of the main reasons for mail being delivered so late is that there are fewer people working so it takes longer to get through the mail sorted and ready for delivery.

Ours arrives a little after one in the afternoon.

Norwegian postal service if anyone is interested:

[personal profile] making_excuses 2014-03-05 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Between 11.00 and 16.00 is the norm think, about 15.00 Monday through Saturday where I live. There are places in Norway that get mail delivered less: either Monday-Friday or Mon, Wed and Fri also some might only get the mail delivered once a week, all those are in cases where the mail can't easily get to the houses, examples being: From the mainland to islands with few people living there, then it goes over with the food or any other kind of regular boat, and also people living in the more remote mountains...

Mine arrives around late afternoon, my mom gets her mail in the morning. We live about two miles apart.

Usually, if your mail time changes to a much later time, it means a new person is doing the route.

It used to always be right around 12 but for some reason lately it's usually between 2-4, and sometimes as late as 5.

At work, which isn't too far from where I live, it's anywhere between 10 and 1, but usually between 11 and 12.

At my parents' house, which is clear across town from where I live, I think it's usually between 12 and 1.

Anywhere from 7am to 6pm. There's been no set time, it depends on how busy they are really - and we're close to the post office :x I guess there's a trend for things to arrive by 3pm but I've signed off packages at 6pm as they're heading back got the day...and I've missed packages that were at 6am! I think the area list gets randomised a bit as to if we're morn or arvo delivery.

For years, mine always used to arrive sometime around 1 p.m.; now for months it hasn't come until after four.

This actually depends on a lot of things.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes the mailperson has to double up on routes (especially with the cutbacks). And if you get a new mailperson, they may decide to do the route differently (as far as I know, there is no one set way to do it - you can go for the furthest out and work in, you can start at the closest and go on, or you can make a rough circle).

I don't mind saying I live in Los Angeles. Depending on neighborhood, I've seen mail delivered from 8 in the morning to 8 at night. *shrugs* Lotta homes, not enough mailmen. If there have been a lot of new homes built in the postal district recently, or if the post office recently fired/laid off a lot of people, this can cause mail to take quite a bit longer. Bad weather can also affect the delivery, as the mail need to stay dry, as well as mechanical issues with even a few mail trucks.

It can arrive from anywhere between 3pm and 6pm. But it's usually there when I get home from work, which most days is after 5:30pm.

My mail usually comes through in the afternoon. It was already here when I got home at 2, but sometimes it might be delivered 2-3pm, while UPS or Fedex have come earlier than that before.

Mine usually shows up sometime between 12-2 (I live close to my work and usually go home for lunch, and it's normally there by the time I get home or it arrives as I'm leaving to go back). Unless I'm waiting on a package I expect to have to sign for, then it always manages to come late enough to ensure no one's home and I have to go to the post office for it.

Usually between 3 and 4 PM. Now that I think about it, we live on the very edge of town, so we might be pretty late into our mail carrier's route? I dunno if that's how it works, though.
