Great Scenes from the Pilots of your favorite shows

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Even if the pilot in general was crap, surely every show's pilot has at least one great scene that you love, even if it's only in hindsight? Something that would make someone go "oh, yeah, this is cool!" or "I like that character" or laugh or something that indicates that this is a show worth watching. If the pilot was genuinely good, list your favorite scene.

And remember to explain why the scene(s) you point out are good!

Supernatural - Sam is saying, basically, 'mom is dead and nothing we do can bring her back' and Dean slams him into a bridge strut and gets up in his face in this kind of frenzy, saying 'don't talk about her like that'. And you can see how pissed and hurt he is and then he just takes a couple steps back, totally disengaging and that's Dean, right there, bam. Hell of a lot of emotion that he ruthlessly suppresses.

Most of the scenes on the bridge were just really pretty/neatly shot, the darkness and the 'woman in white' looking so gauzy and unearthly, the slight mist, the dark bulk of the bridge....

The last scene of the West Wing pilot (I always talk about the West Wing on here but whatever it's really good). They spend the entire episode following the White House staff and never showing the President, and then at the end he comes out at just the right moment like BAM and it's perfect and you know you're going to love him and the show forever. The end.

"I AM THE LORD YOUR GOD. THOU SHALT WORSHIP NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME.

...boy, those were the days, huh? *adorable grin*"

Basically why I love Bartlet, in one 5 second scene. :)

I really liked when Kennex through the MX out of the car.

Also when Dorian woke up.

The "shark week" monologue from Community. The rest of the jokes were hit-or-miss in that pilot-y sort of "I think I could like this once it finds its feet" way, but that scene, and especially Joel McHale's delivery, amde me go, "Oh, this is gonna be a show that gets me."

Breaking Bad - Walt, in his ridiculous tighty-whities, glasses, and Boring Dad hair, in the middle of the desert, aiming a gun.

The West Wing - "I am the Lord your God. Thou shall worship no other Gods before me."

The Wire - McNulty pissing on the railroad tracks as the incoming whistle sounds.

Classic Who - Ian and Barbara realizing the phone box is bigger on the inside.

New Who - Nine: "What are you doing here?" Rose: "I live here!" Nine: "What d'you do that for?"

Downton Abbey - Robert Crawley running after Mr. Bates' carriage apologizing.

How I Met Your Mother - Ted stealing the blue French horn from under the maitre d's nose.

South Park - Kyle: "But...why did you turn the cows inside out?" Aliens: "Oh, that was Carl's fault. He's new." Carl the Alien: "Yeah sorry, my bad."

Starsky & Hutch - Starsky's epic speech in the shithole bar followed by them helpfully passing out paper and pencils so everyone can answer him without getting bumped off.

M*A*S*H - Father Mulcahy winning the raffle for a night with nurse whats-her-name is the only good scene I can remember from the M*A*S*H pilot tbh.

Star Trek TNG - The scene between Data and old!McCoy. "Well, she's a new ship, but she's got the right name. You treat her like a lady, and she'll always bring you home."

Revolution-the fight scene on the stairs between Miles and the militia. It's one guy who pretty much takes on twenty guys and wins. I believe that scene won the stunt guy an Emmy because it was just that impressive. I will rewatch the scene alone over and over again.

Person of Interest: The pilot was amazing in every way but the greatest scene is the one where the two main characters meet for the first time, under the Brooklyn bridge by the river. It's beautifully shot, very mysterious (makes you wonder 'who the hell is this guy and how does he know everything?') and sets the mood for the entire show. Also, it has memorable quotes.

'You don't know anything about me.'
'I know exactly everything about you, Mr Reese.'
