Mispronunciation of words.

I live in the South, born and raised. When you say Pecan as "Pee-can" or caramel as anything other than "carah-mul", I vein pop like whoa.

And don't get me started on people who mispronounce Arkansas as "Ar-Kansas."

It's irrational, but I literally cannot with other pronunciations.

There is actually a town in Kansas called Arkansas. You pronounce it Ar-Kansas. And if you don't people get mad. Though many people just call it Ark-City.

We have a county in my state that is spelled Lafayette. Normally, it's pronounced as the French word it is, but in this place, you pronounce it as La-FAY-ette. Or people will get really miffed.

You'd love me then. I derive a perverse sense of enjoyment from deliberate mispronunciations and malapropisms.

Those are the only words I have issues with though, that and the name of the city Sikeston, MO. People will pronounce that as Sick-eston. It drives me nuts, but over all? Not usually a problem. Just certain words do not sound right and when I leave my area it grates on me something fierce.

My aunt told a story this weekend about how she did a neighborhood scavanger hunt for a wedding or something, one of the items on the list was "peacan," so she thought she was supposed to be looking for a "pea can" -- a can of peas. Turned out it was "pecan" misspelled because of the way it's pronounced in the place where the people she was visiting lived (and I totally forgot where that was).
