I don't think it's hard to understand, but it is definitely Victorian, and not everyone does well with Victorian prose.

I'm not one of them but I understand that some people just find it tiresome. This doesn't mean they're stupid or uneducated. The Victorian prose we think of tends to be very "upper class", too, meant to show off one's status and education and ~free time.
