Yep, but there's a difference between a candle and a bonfire and as a rule clean apartments don't attract that much vermin (I'm talking about first world living conditions here). All it needs is one apartment that gets infested with cockroaches or bedbugs and the whole building will need to be fumigated, so don't offer them perfect playgrounds.

Also, at the stage when the piles have merged into one another and taken over the hoarder's home, to the point where you have to navigate the place by narrow lanes between waist high heaps of dreck, it's impossible to clean.

It's possible if you have somewhat of a system. For me that's boxes that are stackable. You can move them around if you wish to clean, though it's a bit more effort than an empty room obviously.

Trust me, it gets to be a problem when there's no place to move the boxes to when you want to move them around, because there are already boxes everywhere you might move them to.
