I've gotten to chapter 5. So far, nothing has topped the hairpin sidequest.

Hairpins are selling at surprising volume and for exorbitant prices. When folks spend enough time around them, they just have to have one of their own. You follow, and try to protect, two little girls who're tracking the source of the hairpins.

Turns out they're made from fairy wings--ripped off while the fairies are still alive. It's pretty over the top, but the villain's voice actress really sells the pleasure she takes in their "adorable" screams. The reason for such a macabre material is that when removed, the wings produce a scent that causes obsession and ultimately madness--the goal is to destroy the entire town in the conflict over the hairpins. When the villain attacks, you're too busy fighting her off to protect the children--afterwards, you find that they've killed each other with their bare hands while fighting over some of the pins.

Like I said, over the top. But it's not what I expected from a game like this.

It's the fact that they're children that's shocking. A lot of bad things happen to children in Bravely Default.

I had the same reaction when reading The Hunger Games. But that didn't have cutsey art, so with a game like this which is super pretty and chibi it's more surprising.
