I didn't know til you mentioned it below but I have a crap memory.

Yep I'm just learning Bokmål for writing and repeat whatever the nice people on the audio say, which reflects more or less what's written (though I can hear differences in pronunciation from person to person). I've had a look at some dialect comparisons and it makes my head hurt slightly so I'm just sticking with the "one" language for now til I get more confident and can learn the differences between some of the dialects.

Yeah I think the similarities with norsk are partly the Anglo-Saxon-Frisian invaders in Britain thing, and then Norse invaders/settlers later on. But then the Brits acquired French overlords and language, plus I think the Celts got some Latin in from the Romans before the Angles invaded. It's confusing.

I don't even want to think about the Thai dialects. Standard Bangkok is good enough for me right now!

Awww. I was impressed and thought you figured out they were Norwegian because you used your language powers to pick up on patterns in the way they were talking.

I realize this is silly.
