If it's not to people's taste, that's cool, but difficult to read it is not.

I actually like Doyle's style. I like the way he sometimes alerts the reader to certain events that are happening through the characters' uninterrupted dialogue rather than by pausing to insert some third-person narration. For example, Holmes and Watson might be in the sitting room talking to someone and Holmes will be saying "...Blah blah blah. Yes, thank you, Mrs. Hudson. Please set the tea over here. As I was saying, blah blah blah..." You know Mrs. Hudson came in with tea without the narration having to tell us this.
