I know there are polls suggesting young people read less, but I wonder if that's more about less things coming in book form than than an actual generational thing...

Yes, this. Blogs, online articles, fanfic, internet forums, even twitter/facebook feeds. It's all reading but I bet it wasn't counted in.

I'd be amazed if the average young person doesn't actually read more than they would have before the internet, which is a primarily text-based medium.
