Sherlock has books and movies and other tv shows around it - in other words, a built-in fandom.

The original books are not "around" Sherlock, tyvm, and many canon fans can't stand the show.

well excuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me princess

I just realized that for a generation, the "excuuuuse me" line is a Spaceballs quote, not a Steve Martin quote.

I'm just going to climb onto this ice floe and drift off now, pardon me.

I thought it was a quote from that awful Legend of Zelda cartoon. What generation am I?

Still a built-in fandom for many, many, many people. Sherlock Holmes is sort of everywhere. Ask pretty much anyone who he is, and people will know. A lot easier to build a fandom around something that's basically part of pop culture (and has been for decades), than something utterly unknown and - in the US, at least, because PBS - hard to find.
