Re: Friends, Anons, Countrypeople, Lend Me Your Ears. Computer Help?
Some programs don't have much impact on start-up, some have a LOT of impact (i.e. Dropbox uses a lot of memory to run, but it doesn't have much impact on the start-up process; conversely, GoogleTalk doesn't use much memory to run but sometimes it seriously slows down start-up).
As herypmcderp suggested, defragment your hard drive. Start Menu >> Search Box >> Start typing in 'defrag' and you should get an option to 'Defragment' or 'Defragment and Optimize' your computer (if you don't see anything with defrag, try optimize, it might have the defrag option in there).
Pick a drive (pretty much everything will be in C:, so go with that). First you hit 'Analyze' to see whether any said drive needs to be defragmented (and the computer will figure out what needs to be, within the drive). After that, you defragment. Defragging can take several hours to a day, and while you can use the computer during the process, sometimes it's a pain in the ass to do so, so I'd suggest picking a day when you won't need the computer too much. Run analyze the night before (sometimes the analysis is quick, sometimes it's not), then start your defrag in the morning before you head out for work/school/ect, and it'll probably be done long before you come back home. :P
