The way it was explained to me is, airbags sort of explode out through various parts of the car, and when something explodes inside the car, even if it's designed to do that, it still EXPLODES, and can really only do it once, or something along those lines.

Ironically, the airbag is why my head went through the side window. I didn't know until I was looking up info on fixes for being too short to see over the steering wheel (because on the Prius, the speedometer and fuel gauge are more or less over the steering wheel, and I kept having to lean forward to see it), but apparently airbags are pretty dangerous to short people like me, because the driver's head is supposed to impact it as it's starting to deflate, rather than when it's still inflating. But a shorter person has less distance to the airbag, so our heads hit it while it's still inflating, which can cause neck injuries or ricochet into something else. In my case I suppose it was a trade-off between my head hitting the steering wheel without the airbag or going through the side window with it, though I'm not sure the impact was hard enough I would have done serious damage to myself on the steering wheel. :/
