Short answer. The helix fossil is s an item that can end up at the top of the item list easily, and as a key item, did not get deleted and can't be used.

People kept going to the item screen and selecting it. No matter where Red went, no matter what he was doing, he kept looking at that fossil.

We eventually realized what was happening. It was his cross. it was his RELIGION. His holy purpose was to resurrect the Omanyte.
