Guess I might as well.

What kind of health insurance plans are offered there for people who can't earn much income? What are the best places to look for a job other than craigslist? What areas would you recommend living?

I'm not an expert on health insurance information, but we have that Obamacare going pretty good so there's that, I suppose. Probably some combination of clinics, Medicaid, and Covered California which is the CA Obamacare entity. For job searches, mostly the same as everywhere - I've mostly used indeed.com in addition to Craigslist.

In terms of where to live... it depends massively on how much you're making. Probably the best place if you're on a budget is in the East Bay - Oakland, or somewhere around there. It's a good area and it has good service through BART and other transit around most of the Bay Area, and it's much more affordable than living in SF (although not really cheap) and there's a lot of cool people and stuff to do. Rent in San Francisco proper is completely fucking insane, but you could try living in one of the cheaper areas, which would probably be around the Bayview at this point, or maybe in one of the neighborhoods in the southwest - Bayview has historically been cheap, poor, crime-ridden, and for a long time was one of the last places in the city where African-Americans lived, but it's getting a few more young hipster types. Southwest and west neighborhoods are just very residential and middle-class, although they have a certain charm. Also full of Asian immigrants and delicious Chinese food. There's also the Peninsula and Marin but those are much more residential, not as convenient for transit etc, so unless you're working in one of those places, I'd advise against it. You could also live outside the Bay Area but I'm not sure why you would unless, again, you have a job or a really good reason.

If you're not so worried about a budget, because you're going to be working in tech or something, then live wherever. Probably some neighborhood in San Francisco. North of the Panhandle or in the Mission or something. Rent will be insane but they're pretty awesome places.

I just started reading Tales of the City. Is San Francisco still a crazy utopia of sex and weed or would I be incredibly disapointed?

Eh.... to some extent, yes. It's not as bohemian and starving-artist-in-a-garret as it was back in those days, and it's rare that truth ever lives up to fiction, but it's still a very free-spirited and open city. And people definitely smoke a lot of weed and hook up a lot. And there's still a very prominent gay scene - it's essentially a part of the civic landscape these days (Gay Pride Day is probably the biggest civil holiday there is in the city).

I think at a certain point reputations like that become self-perpetuating - the city draws a certain kind of person because of its image, and those people in turn make it like the image.
