Here where I live that happens (south of Brazil). There are some special lines where you get on and off through the front door and they don't have a guy to collect money, so you interact with the driver. It's pretty usual to thank and/or wish the driver a good day when leaving. Also very usual in buses that go from city to city.

I had no idea there were special bus lines in Brazil. The only thing I know from my classmate (who is from there) is that there's a joke that the reason the buses in brazil don't need seatbelts is because you can't move when you get in them anyway hahaha. Do they really pack you into them or is she just having me on?

Yeah, these special lines are usually smaller buses or even vans, but sometimes they're regular-sized buses with more comfort.

Oh yeah, really, really crowded buses are certainly a thing in medium and big cities. Lots of people standing in the passage, nearly on top of each other. Of course it depends on the time of day, line and city. Here I get a lot less of that than in my home city, which is a lot smaller.
