I've never even been close to Thailand on my travels. What's the local flora and fauna like?

In the north it's more jungle-like. Very humid and whatnot. Down south can also be humid, but there are a lot more beaches. You'll find palm trees pretty much anywhere.

There are squirrels, which always surprise people when I tell them because they assume squirrels only live in cold climates. You don't see many elephants in the cities anymore because they've been outlawed; they have no room on the really crowded sidewalks and they're pretty much paraded around to try and get tourists to pay to feed them. You're more likely to find them in the wild or in elephant conservations. I've also encountered lots of different lizards in Bangkok, just chilling in the big park near my old apartment.

This is a silly question, but how likely would it be to run into something like a snake?

No, it's not silly! Snakes are part of the local fauna. That being said, I have never encountered one in Bangkok, just because it's so urban everywhere there really isn't a place fora a snake to thrive (unless you purposely go to the snake farm). One of my uncles lives a bit further out where there's more foliage and they find a lot of snakes in their back yard. So I'd say it's more likely in rural places, but it wouldn't be too common.

That's a relief. I'm not scared of snakes per say, but I'd love to go to Thailand one day, and I'd definitely have to prepare myself if it was the case. So stay away from rural areas and foliage!
