Some people around here certainly think so. If California split off from the rest of the country, we'd be like the 8th largest world economy, and in comparison to the other states, we're pretty self-sufficient. It's a joke around here that California is only staying in the U.S., not bothering to secede and become it's own country, because a.) we feel sorry for the rest of America and b.) we're just too lazy to really go through that effort. :P

c) Only the North could really do it. The South is far too dependent on stealing water from nearby states. And the North is dependent on the South for a lot of their economy so the North going it alone would probably not be a good idea.

Hence why it's a joke, but yeah, water is kind of the biggest problem (though depending on who you ask, the only 'real' problem). That said, I think in many ways the economic and trade impact would be an interesting take on the economic impact of Californian secession, BUT...we have Silicon Valley in the north, media and military-industrial in the south, and a ton of farmland in middle. Probably we'd be scrambling for a bit and then do just fine in the long run. :P

True. We can always steal water. *_*

The North does create a lot of water, which would help, but it's just not enough to sustain the South.

And it's not like we can't just trade with the other states/buy water, anyway - which I think we already do? It would be more expensive but it's doable. Instead of trading like fellow states, they would be like a foreign country, but hey, economy! :D

Eeeeehhhh... we "trade" for water but really we mostly just take it and then stick our tongues out at the other states. Seriously the other surrounding states are kinda pissed about it.

That sounds like incentive to secede for me... :P
