To give a personal example: I'm living in a small town right now that was established in the mid-1700s, and there's a lot of very old, stately architecture. There are fields and mountains and a river and a canal, and a bunch of really awesome bridges. It's not unique; there are a lot of towns like this. And there's some areas that are very loosely settled and are even more gorgeous for it. In the summer, everything's very lush and green, trees and flowers everywhere, and the autumn the world is just on fire with awesome.
That said, there's also some really, really ugly places, mostly the old industrial cities.
