Another Los Angeles/CA resident here with questions about Britain?
And how to degrees and university work? In the U.S., you major in something (or double major, and sometimes have minors and/or other specialties), and you have to complete certain required classes with a good grade to get that degree (in many cases, there is also a thesis or dissertation). Most of these classes are related to the major, though there are also usually 'general education' requirements so that students at least dabble in most or all subjects (so even if you are majoring in literature, you still need to take a math class or two, and computer science students also take some history classes, etc.) These are usually done by department (i.e. History majors would be in the Social Sciences department, pre-med students are usually in Life Sciences, etc.). These are only where kids learn, and otherwise they tend to live and eat in dorms or off-campus apartments/homes.
In the process of researching for the fanfic, apparently in Britain you don't really have required classes, or at least not like in America? Also, something about colleges in your universities, but I couldn't really figure out if 'college' in this context was a Britishism for department, but it also said something about students of all subjects being in these colleges and apparently you live in them, at which point the question becomes why you lump them all together as one university when apparently they really aren't?
*so fucking confused right now*
