Another Australian, here! (From Sydney, for comparison.)

Heh, nah, we just say that to freak out the tourists. I've seen poisonous spiders in the wild five times (two funnelwebs, three redbacks), and poisonous snakes once (red-bellied black snake, which isn't even the most poisonous). In the suburbs and in the city proper, you're not going to see a lot unless you go for a bushwalk, and even then, maybe not. In more rural areas, especially northern waters, you do get more deadly stuff (saltwater crocodiles, box jellyfish), but even then, attacks are rare (in the past ten or so years, there's only been nine people killed by saltwater crocodiles, mostly kids who were swimming where they weren't supposed to be).

And I actually really like New Zealand! There's rivalry, but it's friendly, basically Sydney rivalry - I actually went there this summer and absolutely loved it, want to go back and see more of it. Both Australia and New Zealand are used to friendly teasing.

Sports rivalries can get a little more intense ;)

But yeah, what caerbannog says about NZ is my experience too.
