I don't mean to be mean, but I don't understand what there is to not get. It's not anything amazingly deep or anything. I think you might be overthinking this.

Eh, I dunno. It seems very simple to us because it's a theme and imagery that we're used to. For someone to whom it's foreign, it might be harder to get than at first seems reasonable.

Ah, I see. Even though I'm not Christian, I was exposed to Christian themes in the culture I grew up in... it was rather myopic of me to assume everyone would have the same cultural background.

Well, anyway, maybe the OP can take comfort in the fact that it's really not all that smart or funny even if you instantly get it.

Eh, imagine people were making jokes that were a direct reference to (I don't know where you're from, so just replace the following example if you are well versed in the religion) Buddha and everyone seemed to immediately understand why it was hilarious and the cultural shorthand that went with it and you were like... ahahah, Buddha, yes.
