I've always thought that Frank Miller only has one story in him, and that story is Sin City. Everything he writes is just "Daredevil in Sin City" "Batman in Sin City" etc. Sometimes, Sin City is a pretty good fit for what he's writing, and sometimes it's really, really, REALLY not.

The Dark Knight Returns was interesting as a sot of alternate universe, worst-case scenario Batman story, but I don't think it was the amazing thing fandom made it out to be. I thought Batman Year One was pretty good, but he certainly shat all over the good parts of it with ASBAR.

I like ASBAR, if only because reading it is a rather surreal experience. It's so completely batfuck insane I get the feeling Miller stopped giving a shit about making sense and just wrote down whatever he thought would be the most ridiculous thing that could happen.

TDKR was the only Batman version I ever liked (apart from the camp 60s TV series). But you're right, it is "Batman in Sin City".

I don't even think Sin City or Dark Knight Returns was all that great in terms of story. Sin City is largely carried by his bold composition and inking, and even on that front there are better artists using minimalist palettes (Peter Kuper for example.)
