I liked the movie (plot holes aside) but I agree the animation lacked something. I also remember reading somewhere that the characters where made in 2d and then modeled in 3d, which is the reason the anatomy looked kinda weird. If you look at the concept art, it looks a LOT better as 2d than 3d.
