AU Flavours/Recs?
(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)Or, while I'm at it, any particular recs for really good AU fic?
Re: AU Flavours/Recs?
(Anonymous) 2014-03-08 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)I like the type of AU that takes one big event from canon and twists it to explore how it would be different.
I like supernatural creature AUs, but oddly enough not superhero AUs.
I am super sick of coffee shop AUs but did find them charming in the beginning.
Haaaaaaaaaaate slavery AUs or the BDSM AUs.
Re: AU Flavours/Recs?
(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 12:13 am (UTC)(link)Yeah, some canons lend better to some things than others, and some fandoms seem to supply better versions of some things than other too.
I've only rarely seen superhero AUs (admittedly, probably because one of my main fandoms IS a superhero fandom where it'd be a tad redundant). I did see a couple of OUaT Superhero AUs. Some better than others.

Yeah, a bit. Though slavery less so, I think, because ... I'm not sure. I think a fair few of the slavery AUs I've read have been against the slavery from the get-go, because it's a real-world thing that doesn't need a set up, so you can just open on the disapproval but still have your kink as well. Whereas the kind of BDSM AUs where the whole society runs on rigid roles have to be set up and imposed on the standard setting, and the effort to build it up often comes across as more creepy/approving than I think (hope?) it's meant to? Also slavery AUs tend to lack the 'biological determinism' element that some BDSM derivatives have, so they're automatically less creepy to me.
But, you know. Different strokes.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 12:15 am (UTC)(link)Huh. I haven't actually read all that many, I think? Well, I've read some prohibition AUs where the main characters are cops, so it's sort of historical cop AUs, but apparently I haven't read that many straight cop AUs. Now that I think about it.
Huh. I'm missing out, yes? :)
Re: AU Flavours/Recs?
There's not so much fic, but there's quite a bit of AU future robot art.
I also love computer game rpg AUs. Especially with faux-medieval settings. Im fascinated by the details. Which character will have which character class? What's their level, what equipment do they have, which weapons will they use?
Again, most of this is art. But there's one fic I can rec with confidence. Although it's a Sherlock/Fire Emblem crossover, I read it first as an AU, as I hadn't played the game yet.

I always found those somewhat weird, but that's probably mostly because I'd never played any RPGs, so it took me a while to figure out that they weren't just bizarre fantasy AUs but were actually referencing a specific type of game system.
Once I figured that out, they were a lot easier to get into ;)
Re: AU Flavours/Recs?
Can't think of particular favorites off the top of my head re: those, but I do like:
Level 65 Paladin Looking for Group - BBC Sherlock, John meets Sherlock through a WoW group
Anything by Broken-Vow for Phantom of the Opera - my favorites include a Modern AU, a Modern AU Kid Fic, and an AU where Erik's still in Persia building his palace and Raoul is brought in/hired as a second idea man and Christine's his wife (I am terrible at summaries, OMG)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-09 01:39 am (UTC)(link)Re: AU Flavours/Recs?
"Not to be confused with Mary Sue, a Peggy Sue fic gives a character, usually at the end of a story or series, the chance to go back and relive her/his life with the knowledge he gained from living through his story the first time."
I love them especially for stories with big twists and/or character deaths because I love reading about the main characters thinking about their own futures and reacting with previous dead/evil characters. And then you throw in all your classic time travel tropes and I just love it.
A lot of them tend to just follow the already established canon path rather than break off and do something new, so really good ones are hard to find.
