Anime as a whole is not whitewashed but it does do whitewashing of certain characters (The Legend of Earthsea, lightening of certain dark-skinned character like Anthy Himemiya from Utena in the TV series vs. the movie). As their colorism is from ancient times but their modern standard of beauty was also affected by the European women standard of beauty on some levels and may have sent their colorism into overdrive. Not to mention that their treatments of other races that isn't Asian was definitely colored by racist media imported from the West, that's why if they draw Black people, they tend to some draw the rare Black character something reminiscent to the Golliwogg and often adopt the Black criminal trope (it's very prevalent in hentai if there are any black men).
