Can we please talk about the glorious trainwreck that is Zen Pencils' artist-troll wars plot? Because I really can't handle it.

Zen Pencils is always a glorious, pretentious trainwreck. The fact that it's now gone meta against people who dare point out that his work is awful is just gravy. I don't think this guy could be up his own ass any farther without power tools.

Okay, I don't follow this comic but I Googled now I'm confused. How is pointing out that trolls and people who spew hateful criticism just for the hell of it are on the opposing side of art and people who wish to create it or see it created? That seems like a reasonable argument to me.

Take a look for yourself! http://zenpencils.com/comic/144-the-artist-troll-war-1-hatred-breeds-hatred/ In this arc, he - represented in comic form by no one less than Miyazaki - teams up with the world's most brilliant minds to combat a giant blob monster caused by online trolls, because he gets criticism from people and it is the worst thing ever. It is very subtle, you see.

Good. I'm on his side on this one. I honestly don't care if it's the most blatant author-self-insert-becomes-giant-robot since Moonwalker (and fuck you if you don't get that reference) I am happy to see someone making the argument that the endlessly cavilling comment corps of the internet are, objectively, of less value than people actually trying to make something new.

Yes, by all means, wallow in the irony of this being an anonymous comment. You're very clever. Shut up.

... Is he one of those dudes who act like any criticism or someone saying they dislike something is "hate"? Because I really really don't like those people.

The first strip up, on the one hand, had comments it labeled as "hate" pretty well, I think: trolling; or derisive, knee-jerk, or thoughtless comments more concerned with being clever than anything else; or people feeling they are owed something. But a couple pop up that made me think, "well, this person may actually have an argument that we're not getting to, even if the final sentiment is obnoxious". (Like "Her performance was thin and unconvincing, turgid and uninspired." It's signed off with the unfortunate #Theatreisdead, but it's possible for a performance to be that, and f.) Maybe this is coming up, but I thought having an example of a thoughtful criticism would make it sit better with me.

I'm a bit sad to find out so many of his comics I liked have...dubious origins. I didn't care for his troll war comics and hadn't paid them much mind. Still not really paying them much mind, not sure why I'm surprised that tumblr cared so much when Miyazaki was invoved..
