While many writers are proud of their show, many like to take the piss out of their own writing.

And, yeah, there are absolutely writers out there that are completely full of themselves, but writers for even really outstandingly written shows generally acknowledge flaws or missteps (although sometimes they don't really think of something as a misstep until they have some distance from it). I like to listen to DVD commentaries ("Yeah, we were supposed to do something with that storyline, but we forgot/realized it sucked and dropped it/had a writer's strike." "I thought that would be cool, but it just didn't work." "The cut scenes actually left a big plot hole, but no one realized it until the episode aired.).

I'm amazed they miss what fans miss. I know they're stressed and all, and not focussed just on the pure story as received like we do, but c'mon! Do a spreadsheet or something.
