She physically attacked him twice, and spent all of HBP calculating ways to get him, not by being nice and pleasant, but by belittling him in front of others and doing her best to make him feel bad.

Woah, okay. All the responses here today have been kind of unexpected for me, which just makes me think the fandom need to let go of this notion that Ron Weasley is some kind of delicate flower in need of defending from his tiny, abusive woman of a girlfriend. Sarcasm aside, though, saying Hermione physically attacked him isn't fair, because are we seriously supposed to believe Ron would sustain real damage from her 'assault'? Pardon this, but is he a wizard or not? Clearly, if she wanted to hurt him, she could have, but let's take things into perspective here: in the magical world, siccing canaries on someone is probably the equivalent of pitching a hissy fit and throwing some books. Bitchy, but nowhere nearly severe as a hot iron to the shoulder.

As to turning this around so their roles were switched, well, for one, it doesn't really work that way. Women do and have been getting away with tons of stuff that coming from a man would be considered unacceptable. If it were Ron doing those things then yes, there would be a problem, because you just don't hit a girl, and I'm probably setting back decades of neo-feminist protest by saying that but it's still true.

Girls, even perfectly nice girls, do these little mean passive-aggressive things when they perceive a (real or imagined) slight against their persons, which was Hermione's situation in HBP, and Ron being a dick about everything probably didn't help matters. That's another thing, that this is actually reciprocated on both sides: Ron and Hermione snipe at each other. It's possible that this is what turns people off from their relationship because it is a case of relatively nice people turning absolutely nasty in each other's company, but they've still got a long way to go before hitting certified emotionally-abusive territory. Not to mention what people do at the age of sixteen isn't necessarily an accurate indicator of their behavior for the rest of their life.

That is actually what turns me off from them. I bring up Hermione's actions more than Ron's because Ron's tend to be "stupid boy character" whereas Hermione's just really disgust me.

Girls do do passive agressive things. And I hate that. I hate girls that act that way. If I ever had a friend who started acting like Hermione did with Ron over a boy... I don't know, but the friendship would get some serious thinking over.

What people do at sixteen may not be an accurate representation, but the thing is, Rowling showed us six years of them treating each other like dirt unless someone's life was in danger, with neither of them respecting the things that the other seemed to find important, and it's supposed to be all better because Ron gets a "how to seduce women" guidebook?

I admit to painting it black, but the thing is, that's what I've seen every time I look at the pairing. The exaggeration is sort of like...drunk goggles for the sober.

...ugh, should not analogize at three in the morning.
