I was going to ask about this

I remember seeing, a while back, a lot of people speculating about why Kristoff is with the trolls and not a family or something? i.e. the implications of kidnapping, memory wiping, working children, etc.

A lot of that ended when a Sami poster got pissed off about Sami portrayals in the movie and used 'cutting off Kristoff from his Sami community' as one of the points, or at least that was around when I stopped seeing it so much.

So I'm not sure how/why this is a secret when as far as I know, it's actually a fairly popular headcanon/fanon.

Plenty of people have gotten pissed, and while I don't have the link anymore, there was a big post a while back from a Saami Tumblrite basically saying that while it's great the Saami-inspired music was composed by an actual Saami composer, the performers are still a Nordic, non-Saami group (that isn't just a Disney 'pre-packaged' musical group), and that Kristoff's portrayal in the movie reinforced a lot of stereotypes about the Saami. The one I remember most was that it's a stereotype that Saami ride reindeer, even though they don't, so seeing Kristoff ride Sven all over the place - even if it was just in a 'par for Disney course' manner' - was insulting.
