I really only notice the insulting people who try to get the first word in, probably because they get the most attention that way. But they also tend to get their threads frozen/removed by case pretty quickly doing that...

You may have just found the secret of it. The trolls 7 to 18 hours later are still visible because almost nobody's still checking the comments, so nobody reports them to Case, whereas the earlier trolls get reported.

You'd think that'd defeat the purpose of their trolling if no one is there to pay attention, though. Unless their goal is to just post trollish comments and have them stay there regardless.
