Re: Is the the kind of tumblr nonsense people always talk about?

Aren't dreadlocks just a style for people of African decent because of the texture of their hair, and not religious or anything? Maybe I'm ignorant, but that sort of comes off as ridiculous.

Yep. It's cultural appropriation because "black people always get in trouble for wearing their hair that way and are considered unprofessional/dirty but white people aren't" so if you're white and wear them you are a "violent" racist.

I see this line of reasoning a lot and I have to say it's pretty much bullshit. I have never heard anyone say that. If anything, I have heard white people with dreads described as dirty/unkempt/stoners/wannabe hippies/punks and never with any positive adjectives. Equally, the few people who think dreads are cool think they're cool on everyone, no matter the skin colour.

Ugh, yeah. Nevermind the fact that any kind of dreads - white dreads, black dreads, asian dreads - are considered unprofessional/dirty by a large part of society.

White dreads even get this sort of bonus discrimination/racism, like "why are you acting black?"

All hair locks if left alone and is not maintain. Some types of hair locks quicker than others. Curly locks quicker than straight. But, again, all hair is made up the same protein building blocks just the texture is different.

Tons of cultures have had locs actually. Of course don't tell Tumblr because then you are racist.

AFAIK, Rastafarians of all colours wear dreads for religious reasons.
