(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 03:41 am (UTC)(link)I would actually very much like to see a story about literal brave, tangled ice-dragons learning to fly, come to think of it.
Rise of the Brave, Tangled, Frozen Dragons
(Anonymous) 2014-03-10 06:31 am (UTC)(link)They were ice drakes, the scourge of the Northern Sea. Made to swim as much as fly, winnowing through blizzards and ice floes with equal grace, they resembled eels more than their more famous Southern cousins. Where the little hairless creatures with the interesting languages stared in awe at the ruffled and barrel-chested breeds more common, ice drakes were almost a myth. Pale as a winter sky, subtle as a wisp of cloud, and silent as the creeping cold, they were as majestic as their kin, yet without the obvious brashness of red and gold scales.
Well, normally they were elegant. Frostwind snarled as his younger brother's tail tangled with his own, again, before sinking the tiny needles of his own teeth into his kin's flesh in warning. That set them all off, hissing and bristling like kittens, before a shadow fell over them.
"Enough!" Their mother commanded, her tone hard despite her airy voice. "I did not search out the most remote peak, lay the lot of you, and guard this home constantly despite my hunger and loneliness, just to lose one of you now. Behave."
That should have been the end of it, but Frostwind had inherited both his mother's intellect and bravery, and he knew the situation would not be that easily solved.
"There is no room for us here, Mother." He told her, raising his face to her defiantly. "Most clutches have only two or three drakelings, and are roosted in larger aeries. We cannot even tell which of us has the largest wingspan, as none of us *can* spread our wings."
She knew this, of course she did (Mother was wonderful and knew everything and told the *best* stories) yet she still seemed saddened to hear this. "I cannot take you out, little one." She held her hand up for him to see, her claws longer than his whole body. "As you said, there is not enough space. I might puncture any one of my precious ones if I tried. I do not have an answer for you."
"We can fly." Butted in Snowshimmer, her body almost quivering in excitement. "We have wings. You don't have to take us out, Mother. We can *fly*."
Mother didn't look convinced. "You are still quite young for that..."
"Oh, *please*, Mother?" Blueice pleaded, using the brilliant eyes he was named for against their original owner.
Their mother was torn. On one hand, her children were the very most cherished things in her life, prompting her to leave even her hoard behind to ensure their safety. On the other side, though, was the simple fact that dragons tend to be incredibly stubborn, and got along terribly enough with each other that there was no word in their language for something like a babysitter, nanny, or minder. Eventually she would have to hunt, unless she wanted her precious ones to starve, and they would only try this foolish flight plan then if she refused them now. "... Very well."
There was a tussle to be first, of course there was, but Frostwind thought he'd done pretty well. He wasn't going first, because Shatterchill cheats, but he would be at least second...
Only there wasn't to be a second. Twined together as they were, Shatterchill's lunge had managed to pull the whole clutch out of the aerie.
For the first time in his life, Frostwind felt his wings fully extend. The freedom in just that one motion almost managed to overwhelm the purely physical ecstasy of his very first stretch.
Now was not the time to revel in it, however. Shatterchill and Snowshimmer had also managed to pull free, but Aurora and Blueice were so tightly wrapped together that they couldn't separate.
Frostwind heard Mother scream, but he had no time to take note of it. He only knew that his younger siblings were plunging to their deaths, and he had to do *something*...
He dove for their tails, frantically pulling with claws too baby-soft to harm. The hold loosened, but they were already so far down... Blueice was in a nosedive and Aurora was upside down. Frostwind could probably still pull up in time to glide safely, but there was no hope his siblings would get themselves oriented in time.
Luckily, he was not the only dragon around to protect the youngest of them. Shatterchill was able to latch on to Aurora, his own wings managing to slow both of them enough that a landing would no longer be crippling. Blueice was larger, though, so Snowshimmer was forced to tackle him in her attempt to replicate Shatterchill's move.
Her move was only partially successful, his greater body mass meaning she was just too inexperienced for her to pull it off.
Mother was still with them, however. Now that they had space enough for her to reach between them, she was able to grab her wayward children. She cuddled the two she held to her chest while the others righted themselves and landed, for a certain definition of 'land'. Frostwind shook the snow off his head while Mother curled around them.
"You did so well, my brave little drakelings. So well. I'm so proud of you."
Frostwind cuddled up to Mother and yawned. He was still a very young, and today had been very trying. His last thought before sleep took him was that Mother was even warmer to cuddle up with than his siblings.
